Denver Protesters Fear the "Brown Note"June 16, 2008
It’s the note no one wants to hear: the Brown Note.
Activists gearing up to rail at the Democratic National Convention have expressed concern that Denver authorities will unleash a frequency designed to cause protesters to poop their pants.
There are no reports of a successful brown note incident, but Denver Post columnist Susan Greene writes that “Mayor John Hickenlooper’s administration is only fueling conspiracy theories by refusing to disclose what equipment it’s buying with $18 million in federal money.” She quotes protester-to-be Ben Yager as saying, “I wouldn’t put anything past police in terms of crowd control.”
So should defiant protesters pack Depends? Well, not to stave off any bowel movement machine from the Denver Police Department.
The television show Mythbusters tested out the concept, using specially modified speakers to blast ultra low frequency sounds at their volunteer. While he reported vibrations in his stomach, the show concluded that the brown note was a bust.
The urban myth was featured in an episode of South Park, where the cartoon kids created a sound that caused the entire planet to evacuate simultaneously.
Nonetheless, protestors and the ACLU have filed a lawsuit against Denver to disclose not only technology that may be deployed against them, but other security details as well. The city’s response in a brief filed in federal court: “The public disclosure of any security measures … are precisely the type of information that would allow those who wish to cause harm to devise plans to thwart security.”
The Sassy Eskimo says, “Stay tuned and stay downwind, just in case.”
